AbibiNsroma Foundation Advocates for Unrestricted Access to Potable Water for Ghanaian Women

Accra: The AbibiNsroma Foundation, a women's advocacy group, has called for unrestricted access to potable water for females in Ghana. In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency on the occasion of World Water Day 2026, themed 'Water and Gender,' the foundation emphasized the critical importance of water access for women and girls. The call is part of their larger advocacy for equal opportunities in water management. According to Ghana News Agency, the foundation has been actively involved in various environmental initiatives, including promoting a plastic-free Ghana and educating communities on sustainable practices. The statement, signed by Mr. Robert Amiteye, the Convenor of the foundation, highlighted the significant impact of water management on girl-child education and development in Ghana. It pointed out that when water sources are distant or unreliable, girls often miss school to fetch water, thereby affecting their attendance and academic performance. Additionally, inadequate sanitation facilitie s can expose girls to harassment, leading to higher dropout rates. The foundation outlined several benefits when communities effectively manage water resources. These include increased school attendance for girls, a reduced burden of water collection, safer sanitation facilities that boost confidence, and more time for studies and personal growth. The foundation also advocated for education on the judicious use of water, investment in water-efficient systems such as water closets and smart faucets, protection of water resources, and the implementation of water harvesting and storage tanks. The statement further noted that in Ghana, organizations like the AbibiNsroma Foundation are spearheading water projects that directly benefit girls' education. It also warned about the looming water crisis exacerbated by climate change, which affects many parts of Africa. Disruptions in the water supply pose significant challenges to health facilities and compromise public health, particularly in areas where food vendors and catering services rely on consistent water flow. The foundation concluded with a call for the protection of water resources and urged responsible water usage by all individuals.
