Ghanaian MP’s Bail Applications Denied in the Netherlands

Amsterdam:Accra Mr. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, announced that two applications seeking the release of T Asante Akyem North MP, Mr. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, from custody in the Netherlands have been unsuccessful.

According to Ghana News Agency, the embattled legislator remains in Dutch custody and has not been transferred to the United States, contrary to widespread speculation. Mr. Dafeamekpor shared this update at a leadership press conference before the resumption of Parliament for the Third Meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Parliament.

Mr. Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in May 2026 after arriving from Ghana and has remained in detention pending legal proceedings. The case involves allegations of romance scams and money laundering, which have yet to be addressed by the courts.

The Majority Chief Whip explained that one of the applications for Mr. Frimpong's release was substantive, while the other was an appeal, but both were rejected by Dutch judicial authorities. He emphasized that the outcome of an extradition hearing scheduled for November 18, 2026, will be pivotal in deciding whether Mr. Frimpong will be extradited to the United States.

Mr. Dafeamekpor noted that Parliament is closely monitoring developments and preparing for the substantive hearing, which will be crucial in determining the next phase of the legal process, including any potential extradition request by the United States.
