TCL Advises West African Consumers to Focus on Key TV Display Features Beyond Mini LED Labels

Accra:TCL, recognized as the world's largest Mini LED television brand, has urged consumers in West Africa to prioritize critical display features over the 'Mini LED' label when purchasing televisions. The company highlighted that while Mini LED technology is gaining popularity, televisions with the same label may offer varying viewing experiences depending on the hardware and display architecture used.

According to Ghana News Agency, TCL emphasized three essential factors for consumers to consider when comparing Mini LED televisions dimming technology, the number of dimming zones, and backlight architecture. This advisory comes as TCL reinforces its global market position, citing data from Omdia indicating that the company led global Mini LED TV shipments in the first half of 2026, with 2.43 million units sold, marking a 77.1% increase from the same period in 2025.

TCL explained that Mini LED technology incorporates smaller LED chips than those in conventional LCD backlights, allowing for a denser arrangement that enhances picture quality with deeper blacks and brighter highlights. However, the company warned that the Mini LED label alone does not specify the number of LEDs used, their arrangement, or brightness control efficiency.

Daniel Ray, Director of Sales and General Manager for West Africa at TCL Middle East, Africa, and beyond, stressed the importance of understanding the features impacting overall performance. He mentioned that the outcome of Mini LED technology varies based on hardware versus software dimming, zone count, and backlight architecture, and advised consumers to inquire about these aspects before purchasing.

TCL described hardware local dimming as a method that physically adjusts the brightness of LED clusters, offering precise control over image sections. In contrast, software-based dimming relies on image processing, which may not provide the same level of precision. The company also highlighted that televisions with more independently controlled dimming zones typically offer better contrast and image detail in varied lighting scenes.

Regarding backlight architecture, TCL differentiated between edge-lit and direct-lit televisions, explaining that Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) technology allows for more precise brightness and contrast management. TCL has integrated FALD technology across its Mini LED range to ensure consistent access to advanced display technology for consumers.

The company operates in over 160 markets globally, focusing on consumer electronics, including televisions, audio systems, and other innovative products. TCL encouraged consumers to assess dimming technology, dimming zones, and backlight architecture to gauge a television's performance accurately, rather than relying solely on marketing labels.
