Tour Operators in Ghana Urged to Embrace AI and Professionalism for Tourism Growth

Accra:Madam Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, has urged tour operators in Ghana to embrace professionalism and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure the sustainable growth of the tourism industry. She emphasized the importance of intensifying domestic tourism promotion to enhance the country's competitiveness as a tourist destination.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Muslim delivered this message on behalf of the Chief of Staff, Dr. Julius Debrah, during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) in Accra. The AGM, themed 'Transforming tour operations for sustainable growth Professionalism, domestic tourism and Artificial Intelligence,' highlighted the crucial role of operators and tour guides in shaping visitors' experiences and perceptions of Ghana.

She underscored how positive visitor experiences can lead to repeat visits, positioning tour operators as key ambassadors for the country. Ghana's rich heritage, Pan-African history, political stability, cultural resources, and creative industry were identified as significant opportunities for attracting more tourists. She encouraged tour operators to leverage these national assets in marketing efforts to boost Ghana's international tourism appeal.

Madam Muslim also mentioned the government's commitment to developing tourism infrastructure projects, such as the Accra Marine Drive project and the transformation of Osu Castle into a major tourism destination. She assured operators affected by the recent demolitions at Labadi Beach that efforts would be made to secure interim operational spaces for them.

Mr. Ben Anane Nsiah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), called for a review of visa requirements to make Ghana more competitive. He raised concerns about the need for visitors to provide three-month bank statements and the high visa fees compared to other African destinations, which could deter price-sensitive travelers.

Madam Yvonne Donkor, President of TOUGHA, stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism in tour operations, advocating for high standards of service, ethical conduct, and customer satisfaction. She highlighted the potential of AI to enhance customer service and business operations while urging members to preserve the human connection that defines tourism. The AGM provided an opportunity for members to evaluate achievements, address challenges, and strategize for the industry's growth, marking 25 years since the Union's establishment.
