Ghana Adopts National Communiqué to Enhance Climate and ESG Policies

Accra:Ghana has formalized a National Communiqué aimed at strengthening climate and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies and regulations. This development follows the conclusion of the Ghana National Climate and ESG Policy Summit 2026, held in Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Communiqué was signed to guide government institutions, regulators, financial institutions, businesses, and local authorities in implementing coordinated climate and sustainability policies. The Summit was organized under the theme 'Decoding Policy and Regulation for the Next Economy' by the Office of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, in partnership with Intelligence Nature International (INI).

The Communiqué, signed by Mr. Seidu Issifu, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, and co-signed by Mr. Mahama Ayariga, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, was witnessed by the Association of Ghana Industries and the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana. It outlines three major resolutions to integrate climate and ESG considerations into national development and economic activities.

The first resolution calls for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to integrate climate and ESG considerations into their planning, budgeting, and coordination processes, with sustained investment in institutional capacity. The second resolution advocates for a phased timetable for climate and ESG disclosures, improved transparency in the carbon market, and the mobilization of blended finance for climate projects. The third resolution seeks a coordinated national response to global market standards, including the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the strategic use of trade policies like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Mr. Issifu emphasized the shared commitment among stakeholders to pursue a common direction for climate and ESG policy in Ghana, focusing on institutional implementation and progress reporting. Dr. William K. Bannerman, CEO of Intelligence Nature International, highlighted the importance of transforming climate regulations into national priorities for coordinated execution.

The Ghana National Climate and ESG Policy Summit serves as a national platform for developing climate and ESG regulations, with the 2026 edition attracting around 200 senior delegates, including policymakers and development partners.
