Accra:Former Nigeria international Peter Osaze Odemwingie has named Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time, ranking the former Chelsea midfielder above other legendary figures in Ghanaian football.
According to Ghana Web, Odemwingie made this statement during a TikTok live session when asked by Bryt FM to identify the greatest Ghanaian player in history. He praised Essien for his outstanding qualities and abilities on the field.
Odemwingie acknowledged the contributions of other notable Black Stars players such as Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan, and the Ayew brothers. However, he ultimately chose Essien, valuing the midfielder’s ability to combine defensive responsibilities with a remarkable goal-scoring threat.
Essien's career was marked by his stints at several top European clubs, including Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. He became known for his strength, tactical intelligence, work rate, and his ability to impact matches defensively and offensively. At Chelsea, Essien won multiple major honors, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, solidifying his status in European football.
After retiring from playing, Essien transitioned into coaching and is currently an assistant coach at FC Nordsjælland in Denmark. Odemwingie's choice underscores the high regard for Essien beyond Ghana, especially among those familiar with the historic football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria.
While iconic figures like Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah remain celebrated from earlier generations, and players like Muntari, Gyan, and the Ayew brothers have significantly influenced Ghana's football history, Odemwingie believes Essien's unique combination of skills makes him the greatest.
