Accra:The Concerned Students’ Movement of the University of Ghana has announced that it will stage a protest on Monday, November 2, in response to a 26% increase in accommodation fees at university halls and facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL).
According to Ghana Web, the student group is demanding a reduction in the revised charges, refunds for students who have already paid the increased fees, and greater transparency in decisions affecting accommodation costs. Ishmael Oduro-Acheampong, a member of the movement, stated that they are engaging with the Dean of Students’ Affairs and other university authorities to address their concerns before the protest.
Oduro-Acheampong described the new accommodation charges as excessive, noting that the cost of some facilities had risen sharply within just two semesters. He highlighted that facilities previously priced at approximately GH₵3,000 to GH₵4,000 are now being charged at around GH₵8,000. The group is questioning the process through which the increases were determined and is insisting on student consultation and clear explanations before implementing new charges.
The movement is also calling for greater accountability from the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) in its handling of issues affecting students. Oduro-Acheampong emphasized the need for university authorities to justify the fee increases and demonstrate how the revised fees align with the services provided to residents. The planned protest underscores the students' demand for a review of the charges and increased student involvement in decisions regarding accommodation costs.
