Ashanti Region Police Report GH250,000 Lost in Five Attacks on Mobile Money Vendors

Kumasi:Police in the Ashanti Region have reported five robberies targeting mobile money vendors since January, resulting in a loss of nearly GH250,000. These incidents have prompted authorities to urge increased vigilance among vendors.

According to Ghana Web, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Francis Nimo, speaking at a Mobile Money Agents Forum organized by Mobile Money Fintech Limited in Kumasi, emphasized the importance of agents remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious individuals around their shops to the police. DSP Nimo noted that some suspects have been traced from banks and urged agents to be observant and raise alarms if they notice suspicious characters.

The police have managed to arrest suspects in two of the cases. DSP Nimo also highlighted challenges faced in obtaining information from telecommunications networks during investigations, citing MTN's responsive cooperation as opposed to difficulties with other networks. He pointed out that many fraud cases result from user mistakes, underscoring the need for caution during transactions.

Meanwhile, David Nana Addai, MoMo Channel and Development Manager, warned customers and agents against sharing personal identification numbers (PINs) and one-time passwords (OTPs), as fraudsters use these to access electronic wallets. Addai described tactics used by criminals, such as impersonating telecommunications officials to trick customers into revealing confidential information. He stressed the importance of keeping PINs secure to prevent unauthorized access to funds.

Addai also cautioned agents about transaction interception by fraudsters who exploit the time gap between transaction initiation and confirmation. He advised agents to verify transaction confirmations before releasing cash and to protect customers' personal information and transaction details, adhering to applicable customer protection laws.

The forum addressed security concerns affecting mobile money operations and highlighted the necessity for vigilance by both customers and agents to mitigate fraud risks. Participants were also introduced to the company's diverse range of products and services.
