Gold Fields’ $4.26 Billion Local Spend Highlights Economic Impact on Host Communities

Accra:Gold Fields Ghana Limited has reported a substantial expenditure of US$4.26 billion on goods and services over the past five years, with US$2.59 billion directed towards its host communities. This underscores the significant role mining procurement plays in fostering economic opportunities for local businesses.

According to Ghana Web, 93 percent of Gold Fields' procurement during this period was conducted within Ghana, involving nearly 100 community vendors. This procurement strategy is part of the company's efforts to retain and distribute more economic value within the communities hosting its mining operations.

The procurement activities of Gold Fields highlight the vast expenditure associated with mining operations and its potential impact on the domestic economy. The company has a history of engaging local businesses, predating the country's mining local-content regulations, by contracting with Ghanaian-owned companies like Zen Petroleum and Genser Energy.

Gold Fields' procurement record will be discussed at its Suppliers Conference in 2026, aimed at strengthening local participation and building resilient supply chains. The event will address procurement practices, opportunities for women-owned enterprises, and other relevant issues.

The company's efforts extend beyond procurement, participating in initiatives like small-scale mining formalization and community development projects, reflecting its broader engagement with host communities.
