Ghana Tennis Federation Commends Wheelchair Tennis Athletes, Calls for Support Towards LA2028

Accra:The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) has praised wheelchair tennis athletes and officials for their dedication and participation in the Ga Mantse Tennis Tournament. The Federation described the event as a significant step forward in advancing the sport within the country.

According to Ghana News Agency, the tournament included men's and women's wheelchair tennis events, showcasing the athletes' skill, determination, and sportsmanship. Bernard Yawson won the men's category, while Daniel Laryea secured the runner-up position. In the women's category, Stacy Konadu Mensah claimed the title, with Bridget Nartey finishing second.

The GTF extended its congratulations to all finalists and participants, acknowledging their efforts in making the tournament competitive and successful. The Federation also expressed gratitude to tournament organizers, Abusua, for incorporating wheelchair tennis, highlighting that such initiatives enhance competition opportunities, visibility, and contribute to the development of para-sports in Ghana.

Representing the Federation's Board, Mr. Henry K. N. Larbi, National Coordinator of Ghana Wheelchair Tennis, emphasized the importance of corporate and institutional backing for the sport. He stressed that sponsorship is vital for enabling Ghanaian wheelchair tennis players to partake in international competitions, earn ranking points, and improve their chances of qualifying for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

Mr. Larbi pointed out that the expenses related to international travel, accommodation, tournament participation, and specialized sports wheelchairs pose significant challenges for many athletes despite their talent and dedication. Consequently, the Federation has called on corporate organizations, government institutions, development partners, and individuals to support the country's wheelchair tennis program.

The GTF noted that increased investment would provide athletes with international exposure, access to modern equipment, and structured coaching and training programs essential for competing at the highest levels. Beyond competition, the Federation highlighted that wheelchair tennis fosters inclusion, boosts confidence, and reshapes public perceptions about persons with disabilities.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Federation aims to expand wheelchair tennis across Ghana through talent identification and athlete development, while expressing gratitude to partners, coaches, officials, families, and supporters for their ongoing contributions. The GTF believes that sustained support and investment are crucial for helping Ghanaian wheelchair tennis players achieve their Paralympic goals and succeed internationally.
