Accra:The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has explained the association's decision to appoint Kim Lars Björkegren as the interim head coach of the Black Stars. The Swedish coach will juggle his responsibilities with the Black Queens due to differences in the international football windows for men and women.
According to Ghana Web, the GFA announced that Björkegren may lead the Black Stars in their critical November matches against Somalia. He will be supported by assistant coach Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko. This decision comes as Ghana seeks to recover from consecutive losses in their Group C matches and revive their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification hopes.
Asante Twum addressed concerns regarding Björkegren's dual roles, noting that the men's international window is from November 9 to 17, 2026, while the women's window spans from November 24 to December 5, 2026. This schedule allows Björkegren to prepare for the Black Queens' FIFA Women's World Cup qualifiers without conflict.
Asante Twum expressed confidence in Björkegren's capabilities, citing his past experience with national teams. He encouraged Ghanaians to support the coach, emphasizing that Björkegren is eager to take on the challenge and test himself in this new capacity.
