Accra:Swedish manager Kim Lars Björkegren has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Black Stars. The decision was made after several local coaches failed to impress the selection committee during the interview process.
According to Ghana Web, the committee responsible for selecting Ghana's next national team coach, chaired by former Ghana Football Association Vice-President Fred Pappoe, evaluated numerous local candidates for the interim role. However, these candidates reportedly struggled to articulate effective strategies for enhancing the team's performance, leading to their elimination from consideration.
Björkegren's selection was influenced by his successful tenure with the Black Queens in international competitions and his experience as part of Otto Addo's technical team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These factors were pivotal in the committee's decision to entrust him with the interim position.
The Ghana Football Association announced that Björkegren will lead the team in an important two-game series against Somalia in November. He will be supported by Black Stars assistant coach Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko. The outcome of these matches could determine Björkegren's future role with the team, as the search for a permanent head coach continues under the guidance of a committee that includes both government and GFA representatives.
