Bernard Otabil Urges Journalists to Humanize Monetary Policy Reporting

Accra:The Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, Bernard Otabil, has encouraged journalists to transform monetary policy decisions into stories that resonate with the everyday experiences of Ghanaians. Instead of merely reporting on technical policy announcements, he emphasized the importance of explaining how decisions regarding inflation, exchange rates, and interest rates impact households and businesses.

According to Ghana Web, Otabil's comments were made during the opening of a three-day training workshop for members of the Bank of Ghana Press Corps. The workshop, held from October 19 to 21, aims to enhance journalists' understanding of monetary policy and the operations of the central bank.

Participants will cover topics such as media ethics, accurate reporting, the Bank of Ghana's mandate, its regulatory role, developments in the foreign exchange market, and inflation dynamics. Otabil stressed the importance of accurate and ethical journalism, noting that misleading reports could incite panic and negatively influence economic decisions.

He highlighted that misinformation and disinformation are significant global threats and described credibility as journalism's most valuable asset. Otabil reiterated the Bank of Ghana's commitment to strengthening ties with the media through initiatives like training programmes and communication platforms.

The event also featured remarks by Suleiman Mustapha, National Organising Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association and a member of the BoG Press Corps.
