Agogo:Plantain packers in Asante Akyem Agogo, located in the Ashanti Region, are capitalizing on the plantain trade to earn substantial daily wages. By packing plantains for transport to markets nationwide, these workers are making up to GHS800 a day.
According to Ghana Web, the packers earn GHS20 for each sack they fill, with some completing between 40 and 50 sacks daily. The physical demands of the job are significant, but the potential income is seen as rewarding by many of the workers.
The task involves sorting, packing, and lifting heavy loads of plantains to prepare them for transportation. The workers spend long hours at loading grounds to achieve their daily targets, which has enabled some to acquire personal assets. One worker has saved enough to purchase a motorcycle, which he now uses to generate additional income.
The plantain trade in Agogo underscores the economic opportunities within Ghana's agricultural value chain, demonstrating how jobs outside traditional office environments can provide a reliable income and asset-building potential.
