Korle Bu Cardiothoracic Centre Faces Staffing Challenges Amid Rising Demand

Korle Bu:The National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is facing a shortage of staff as demand for services in its new cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) rises. Since the lab's commissioning in July 2026, over 80 patients have undergone procedures there, according to Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, the centre's director.

According to Ghana Web, the cath lab was opened on July 9, 2026, replacing a facility damaged by fire and out of operation for about a year. The lab has been crucial in providing specialised cardiovascular care, with some financially supported by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Care.

Dr. Entsua-Mensah emphasized the centre’s need for additional personnel due to the high demand for its services. The shortage has required existing staff to work extended hours, potentially leading to exhaustion. The centre is in need of specialists, including cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, and other medical professionals, to improve service delivery and allow staff to rest and train.

He remains optimistic that the government will address the staffing needs, enabling the facility to operate efficiently around the clock. Dr. Entsua-Mensah also highlighted the contributions of President John Dramani Mahama and other key stakeholders in enhancing cardiovascular care at the hospital.
