Fire Guts Dormitory at Carolina International School, Displacing Students

Agona Kwansakrom:A fire broke out in the boy's dormitory of Carolina International School in Agona Kwansakrom, Central region, on Saturday, October 3, causing significant property damage and displacing around 28 primary and Junior High School students aged 12 to 15.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Agona East Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has assessed the damage caused by the fire. The incident, which occurred between 1200 and 1500 hours, resulted in no casualties as the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was able to control the blaze.

Preliminary findings by GNFS suggest that an electrical fault from a rechargeable fan may have ignited the fire, extensively damaging the newly constructed dormitory. The fire consumed highly inflammable items including mattresses, trunks, chop boxes, stationery, clothing, footwear, school materials, personal belongings, and cash totaling GHC 1,500.00.

Displaced students are currently staying with others and require urgent assistance in both cash and kind to return to their studies. NADMO has increased educational campaigns on fire prevention in the Agona East District to mitigate future incidents.

Mr. Kobena Donkoh, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association, has issued an SOS call through NADMO, appealing to the government and other institutions for relief items such as mattresses, clothing, foodstuffs, roofing sheets, cement, and money to help the school resume classes.
