Ghana to Use 2026 IMF/World Bank Meetings to Boost Investment

Accra:Ghana is preparing to leverage the 2026 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Annual Meetings in Thailand to attract new investment and strengthen ties with development partners, aiming to negotiate agreements that support the country's economic growth.

According to Ghana Web, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, emphasized the significance of these meetings as a platform for engaging international investors, showcasing economic developments, and building partnerships that could benefit the country. Speaking at the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing in Accra, Dr. Asiama indicated that officials from the Ministry of Finance and the central bank would meet with various investor groups during the October meetings.

The engagements will include joint and separate briefings to update investors on Ghana's economic performance, explain policy directions, and explore opportunities for potential agreements. Dr. Asiama underscored the meetings' importance for discussing Ghana's economic program with international counterparts.

In addition to attracting investment, Ghana plans to utilize the meetings to advance discussions with the IMF regarding the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI), following the country's exit from a US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program. An IMF staff team recently visited Ghana to discuss the new policy framework, and the upcoming meetings will further facilitate engagement with the Fund on necessary benchmarks and reforms.

The transition from the ECF program to the PCI marks a shift in Ghana's engagement with the IMF, moving from financial support to a focus on policy coordination. This change aims to sustain Ghana's macroeconomic stabilization and reinforce confidence in its economic management.

The teams from the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana will work to reassure investors about the economy and attract capital into key sectors. The IMF/World Bank meetings are seen as an opportunity for Ghana to communicate its economic policy direction to international stakeholders and explore partnerships that could support investment, job creation, and broader development objectives.

The 2026 IMF/World Bank Group Annual Meetings are scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 12 to 18, 2026. This gathering will bring together finance ministers, central bank governors, and private-sector leaders from around the world. The meetings will focus on digital and artificial intelligence transformation, building resilience, climate adaptation financial architecture, and demographic change.
