NPP National Executive Elections See Upset Defeats for Key Figures

Kumasi:The New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted its national executive elections on October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to select leaders who will guide the party towards the 2028 general election.

According to Ghana Web, the elections, which drew over 7,000 delegates, resulted in surprising outcomes with several prominent members losing their positions. Alfred Ababio Kumi, known as Adenta Kumi, finished last in the National Youth Organiser race, securing only 25 votes. The position was won by Abanga Fuseini Yakubu with 1,550 votes. Kumi accepted the result, acknowledging the importance of resources and strategy in addition to popularity and hard work.

Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, former National Petroleum Authority Chief Executive, narrowly missed a vice-chairmanship, finishing fourth with 2,956 votes, just 31 votes behind Nana Akomea. Despite his loss, Hamid emphasized the party's interests over personal ambitions.

In another significant loss, Eugene Boakye Antwi, former MP for Subin, failed to unseat incumbent General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, receiving only 162 votes. Kodua retained his position with 4,486 votes, showcasing strong delegate support despite criticism over past election results.

Nana Akomea secured the Third National Vice Chairman position with 2,987 votes but expressed disappointment at not ranking higher. He noted the competitive nature of the race, attributing rival Kojo Fosu Boadu's success to his distinct campaign message.

Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko's bid for National Chairman ended in defeat as he placed second behind John Boadu, who won with a 480-vote margin. Agyarko was seen by some analysts as a unifying figure for the party, but fell short in the contest.

Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, the outgoing Deputy National Youth Organiser, also experienced a significant setback, polling just 46 votes in the National Youth Organiser race. His prior role did not translate into the electoral success needed to advance within the party's leadership.
