Accra:The Reverend Daniel Ahenkorah, a pastor and philanthropist, has urged the Government and the public in Ghana to improve the recognition and working conditions of teachers. He emphasized the critical role teachers play in the country's educational system and national development.
According to Ghana News Agency, Rev Ahenkorah highlighted that teachers are essential to developing Ghana's human capital by imparting the necessary knowledge, skills, and values to future leaders. He stressed that addressing issues such as salaries, allowances, and promotions for teachers should be a national priority.
Rev Ahenkorah pointed out the ongoing disagreements between the Government and teacher unions over employment matters, advocating for continuous dialogue and understanding to address educators' concerns. He also noted that teachers have been instrumental in shaping professionals across various fields, underscoring their contribution to technological and institutional progress.
He questioned the persistent challenges teachers face in improving their working conditions despite their significant societal contributions. Rev Ahenkorah argued that enhancing teachers' welfare should be viewed as an investment in education and socio-economic development rather than a burden.
Rev Ahenkorah, drawing from his personal connection to the teaching profession, called for a shift in public perception to value educators as key partners in national development. He suggested that better appreciation of teachers could attract talented individuals to the profession and retain experienced educators.
He also raised concerns about the difficulties some trained teachers face in gaining employment and the delays in salary payments for newly appointed teachers. He advocated for improved administrative processes to ensure timely payments and transparent recruitment procedures.
Rev Ahenkorah urged all stakeholders, including parents and civil society, to support initiatives aimed at enhancing teachers' welfare. He emphasized that sustainable national development relies on adequately supporting those responsible for educating future generations.
