Upper Dixcove:The Chief Fisherman of Upper Dixcove, Nana Kwaku Dadzie, has voiced concerns over the impact of power fluctuations, known locally as 'dumsor', on the fishing industry in the Western Region. The issue of inconsistent electricity supply has been significantly affecting the operations of cold stores, which are crucial for preserving fish for both storage and commercial purposes.
According to Ghana News Agency, the power outages threaten the livelihoods of those involved in the fishing industry and its related value chain. At a workshop organized by Friends of the Nation (FoN), an NGO aiming to inform fishers about recent developments in the marine sector, Nana Dadzie expressed his frustration with the current situation.
The workshop was part of a project titled 'Protecting Our Zone, Securing Our Future.' Nana Dadzie emphasized that fishing is the economic backbone of his community, yet it faces severe challenges due to frequent power cuts. He urged the Ministry of Energy, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the government to take immediate action to resolve this ongoing issue.
Fishers and fishmongers also shared their struggles with the Ghana News Agency, describing how the power outages have caused significant hardship. They highlighted the difficulties in managing household expenses, particularly in supporting their children's education at secondary and tertiary levels.
