Kumasi:Demolition work has started at Abrepo Junction in Kumasi to clear the way for the next phase of the Suame Interchange construction. This initiative involves a security task force and personnel from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), supported by a bulldozer, following directives from city authorities and contractor specifications.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise follows previous engagements by the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi. On August 25, 2026, he led a team of technical experts, including road engineers, to Abrepo Junction and other designated areas to brief residents on the planned evacuation necessary for the project's commencement.
The KMA Public Relations Unit had initially instructed traders and garage owners at the Abrepo and WESCO sections to relocate by September 7, 2026. However, this deadline was extended to October 7, 2026, to allow more time for relocation.
On October 7, a day before the demolition began, the Mayor, accompanied by a security task force, visited the affected areas to urge traders and residents to relocate. By the start of the demolition, most had moved voluntarily, although some structures belonging to non-compliant traders were demolished to continue the project.
The Suame Interchange aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in one of Kumasi’s key transport corridors.
