Social Media Personality Claims Wrongful Imprisonment Over Employer’s Crimes

Amman:Social media personality Daniel Amartey, known as 'Short Prophet,' has recounted his experience of serving a wrongful five-year imprisonment at Nsawam Medium Security Prison for crimes he claims were committed by his deceased employer.

According to Ghana Web, Amartey shared his story during an interview on the Convo with the Face podcast. He explained that the situation unfolded in 2015 after his employer passed away. A month post-funeral, the employer's family asked him to reopen their shop to support the children left behind. However, shortly after resuming operations, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) raided the premises.

Amartey said EOCO officials, accompanied by a handcuffed associate of his late employer, searched the shop and discovered a locked cabinet containing materials allegedly used to forge fake certificates. Despite his claim of ignorance about the items, Amartey was arrested and detained for a week before being granted bail.

Financial difficulties and inadequate legal representation complicated his legal defense, leading to his conviction and imprisonment. Initially sentenced to five years, Amartey served three years and eight months due to sentence calculation rules.

Amartey, formerly the deputy captain of Ghana's national amputee football team, the Black Giants, asserted that EOCO officials were aware of his innocence. He recounted an encounter with one officer post-release, who allegedly admitted Amartey's lack of involvement, attributing the situation to organizational directives.
