Ghana Urges Stronger Protections for Migrant Workers at UN Meeting

Jakarta:Ghana has appealed to United Nations member states to enhance protections for migrant workers and their families and to seek an end to conflicts in war-torn regions.

According to Ghana Web, Ghana's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Samuel Yao Kumah, addressed these issues during a recent meeting of the UN Human Rights Council. He emphasized the importance of keeping human rights central to the governance of migration.

Ghana is working on bilateral labor agreements to improve legal protections for its citizens working overseas. Kumah highlighted the importance of protecting migrant workers and their families, promoting fair recruitment, ensuring decent working conditions, and providing access to remedies to prevent exploitation.

Kumah also urged member states to make human rights a key component of migration governance, in line with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration. He reiterated Ghana's dedication to human rights and basic freedoms, referencing the country's Constitution, the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
