Joyce Bawah Highlights Financial Challenges for Ghanaian Women

Sanaa:Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Senior Presidential Advisor and Senior Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized the persistent financial hurdles faced by women in Ghana despite the increase in bank and mobile money account ownership. As of 2024, 78.3% of Ghanaian women aged 15 and above have such accounts, a significant jump from 27.1% in 2011. However, the gender gap remains, with 84.4% of men holding accounts.

According to Ghana Web, Mogtari pointed out that merely having an account does not equate to access to the capital needed for business growth. In the second quarter of 2026, women and women-owned businesses made up 82.8% of secured credit transactions in Ghana but only received GHS3.1 billion in secured credit, compared to GHS19.4 billion for male borrowers and businesses.

She called for targeted measures to enhance women's access to affordable financing and support for women-led industries. Mogtari stressed the importance of including the Women's Bank's future, more affordable lending options, flexible collateral requirements, and patient capital in discussions aimed at building inclusive and resilient economies, with a focus on women's roles in economic growth.
