Nii Odartey Lamptey Criticizes Influence on GFA President Kurt Okraku’s Legacy

Accra:Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has expressed concerns that those surrounding Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku are hindering his ability to establish a positive legacy.

According to Ghana Web, Lamptey's remarks come amid mounting criticism of the GFA following Ghana's poor performance in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia, having initially led 2-0 in the latter match at the Accra Sports Stadium.

These results have left the four-time African champions without any points from their first two matches, putting them under pressure to revive their qualification hopes after missing the 2025 AFCON. Lamptey, who earned 38 caps for Ghana and participated in the 1992 Olympic Games, suggests that Okraku's challenges are exacerbated by his associates.

"I love Kurt Okraku, but he has created enemies for himself, and the enemies want his downfall," Lamptey told 3Sports. He remarked that until Okraku realizes the need for change, many issues will persist against him, with widespread complaints evident.

Lamptey also indicated that the discord surrounding the GFA president is impacting the broader administration of football in Ghana. He stated that creating enemies adversely affects one's work, which he believes is currently affecting Ghanaian football.

The GFA is under increased scrutiny due to the Black Stars' recent performances and the overall direction of the national team. After the defeats to Ivory Coast and The Gambia, head coach Carlos Queiroz parted ways with the team by mutual agreement. The GFA is now tasked with appointing a new coach to help Ghana revive its AFCON qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars are set to face Somalia in a double-header in October at the Accra Sports Stadium. Ghana will need to secure maximum points from these matches to enhance their standing in Group C and bolster their chances of returning to the continental tournament.
