Accra:Following the voluntary appearance of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), significant developments have unfolded involving his arrest and subsequent investigation. These events follow a court order authorizing his arrest.
According to Ghana Web, EOCO is conducting an investigation into alleged unauthorized financial transactions, suspected financial losses to the state, dissipation of public funds, and money laundering at SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited. The investigation focuses on Baffour Awuah's law firm, Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, which was contracted to recover a debt from Equity Savings and Loans on behalf of SIC Life.
Documents from EOCO allege that Baffour Awuah settled a debt without board authorization, received irregular payments from conflicting parties while representing SIC Life, and distributed funds to a former Managing Director.
Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer for Baffour Awuah, disclosed that the MP was detained by EOCO and spent the night in custody. Atta Akyea questioned the necessity of this detention, given the MP's cooperation and the availability of relevant documents to the investigators.
The investigation also included a search of Baffour Awuah's office. Investigators, accompanied by the MP, executed a search warrant as part of their probe into the alleged financial irregularities. The lawyer noted that EOCO intended to search the MP's residence as well, but lacked the necessary warrant to do so.
During the office search, EOCO officers seized the control unit of the office's CCTV system. Atta Akyea questioned the relevance of this seizure, noting that it seemed to fall outside the scope of the investigation. He expressed concern that the items taken were unrelated to the investigation's focus.
EOCO issued a statement on October 1, 2026, clarifying that their investigations pertain to allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, and tax-related offences. The investigation is centered on transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and the recovery of funds from Equity Savings and Loans, examining the conduct of individuals connected to these transactions.
