Accra: The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has issued a stern warning to residents against the unauthorized felling of trees within the metropolis. The trees play a crucial role in mitigating the environmental impact of the city's industrial and port operations.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, highlighted a recent incident at the Meridian Enclave where at least 10 trees were felled without obtaining a permit or consulting the assembly. She described the act as criminal and part of a larger issue of lawlessness that undermines the city's environmental and regulatory frameworks.
Madam Bright emphasized the strategic planting of trees in Tema due to its status as a major port and industrial hub with high carbon emissions. She pointed out that these trees are vital for ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, as they clean the air, regulate temperatures, and improve overall environmental conditions.
She expressed concern over the unauthorized felling, especially given the environmental pressures from industrial and port-related activities. The MCE made these remarks during an inspection of the illegal felling site and noted the assembly's ongoing struggle with numerous unauthorized activities across the city, complicating enforcement efforts.
Madam Bright called for cooperation from residents, businesses, and stakeholders to adhere to the city's regulatory and environmental management systems. She urged those involved in developments affecting public spaces to engage with the assembly and secure necessary permits.
The MCE also highlighted broader environmental challenges, including the degradation of drainage and sewer networks and unregulated development, which have compromised public utility infrastructure and created sanitation issues.
