Geneva: The European Union's (EU) commitment to the right to development was underscored by EU Ambassador Deike Potzel during her intervention at the Biennial panel discussion on the right to development. Potzel emphasized that development is an inalienable and universal right, integral to human dignity and a responsibility that the EU has upheld for 40 years. This vision, she noted, is deeply rooted in the Declaration on the Right to Development, positioning individuals as central actors, drivers, and beneficiaries of development. According to European Union, Potzel highlighted that development is sustainable only when it goes hand in hand with the promotion of human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democracy. She stressed that development cannot be measured solely by economic metrics nor be a precondition for human rights fulfillment, as they are mutually reinforcing. The foundation of sustainable development relies on good governance, rule of law, transparent institutions, and meaningful participation of civil society. Potzel elaborated on the EU's approach to sustainable development, which seeks to eradicate poverty, end discrimination, and reduce inequalities, guided by the 2030 Agenda and the principle of leaving no one behind. She emphasized that financing strategies must contribute to the realization of human rights, including the right to development. The EU's commitment is reflected in the USD 112.5 billion in Official Development Assistance provided last year, representing nearly half of all global development assistance from DAC donor countries. The ambassador also highlighted the transformational nature of the EU's support, exemplified by the Global Gateway strategy, which has mobilized over EUR 306 billion for sustainable development projects. These initiatives span digital connectivity, climate resilience, health, education, and energy, contributing to the realization of economic, social, and cultural rights. A notable project includes the Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines, and Hea lth Technology Products in Africa, promoting local vaccine manufacturing in several African countries. Potzel concluded by emphasizing that the right to development is about creating inclusive and sustainable societies where everyone can participate and thrive. As the Declaration on the Right to Development marks its 40th anniversary, the EU remains committed to honoring and advancing this right.
