New winneba: The Central Regional Disaster Management Committee, led by Mr. Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, has initiated comprehensive security, humanitarian, and disaster responses in the aftermath of a severe communal clash in New Winneba. The clash, which occurred in the community along the Winneba-Swedru highway, has prompted the deployment of police forces, including specialized national reinforcements and two armored vehicles, to ensure the security of the township.
According to Ghana News Agency, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has mobilized local field teams to evaluate the extent of displacement, structural damages, and immediate relief requirements. A statement by Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood, the Regional Director of NADMO, indicated that teams are actively registering displaced individuals, assessing damage to homes and public facilities, and collaborating with health and security agencies to prioritize urgent needs such as emergency shelter, food, water, and medical support.
NADMO is also offering psychological support to affected families and victims receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. The organization is coordinating with regional security councils, district leaders, and local assembly members to establish temporary shelters and safe havens, distribute relief, and enforce community safety protocols. This swift response aims to prevent secondary public health risks and gather data for targeted humanitarian aid and recovery planning. Early assessments by NADMO Central are expected to guide resource allocation and long-term rehabilitation efforts for impacted families.
The violent incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 1, involved approximately 300 individuals armed with weapons such as guns, cutlasses, stones, and sticks. The clash resulted in three fatalities and left about 15 people, including a police officer, severely injured. The victims are currently being treated at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. The confrontation, which took place around 10:40 hours, is reportedly linked to a growing land litigation dispute and involved participants from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze. Several shops and residential properties sustained damage during the violence.
In response, police have arrested six individuals connected to the incident. Authorities have retrieved a locally made single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene. The suspects have been identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52 years; Arko Thomas, 19 years; Samuel Tulasi, 19 years; Samuel Gyasi, 22 years; Emmanuel Okyere, 22 years; and Seth Osei, 22 years.
