Accra: Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People's National Convention (PNC) prior to the 2024 general elections, has candidly revealed the circumstances that led to his resignation from his position as an accounts officer at what was previously the Internal Revenue Service, now known as the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in 2023.
According to Ghana Web, Mornah admitted in an interview on UTV's Ayekoo with Anim Addo on August 27, 2026, that during his tenure at the Internal Revenue Service, he occasionally diverted office funds to assist individuals he referred to as his 'boys' with their financial troubles. Recognizing his ineptitude in managing money, Mornah feared that if he hadn't taken corrective measures, he might have faced legal consequences.
Mornah explained, "I used to work at the Internal Revenue Service, now the Ghana Revenue Authority, but during those times, I was still doing farming. I resigned in 2023 because one of the things I realised was that my pay wasn't enough for me. I was an accounts officer, and because of that, I didn't get time to do extra work."
He recounted that his supervisor, Owusu Ansah, persistently urged him to perform his duties diligently and rectify any errors made by other officers. Mornah admitted that at the end of each month, he would use his own salary to replenish the funds he had taken from the office to avoid detection during audits.
Mornah's eventual decision to resign was influenced by Owusu Ansah's intervention, which made him aware of his financial mismanagement issues. Mornah said that he realized he risked arrest if he continued to mishandle funds. He mentioned, "I also noticed that if I hadn't taken time to change, I would have been arrested because, for me, if you give me money and my boys come around, I might share it with them."
Mornah concluded by stating that he recognized his limitations in handling cash and made the conscious decision to leave his accounting role.
