Accra: Acclaimed Ghanaian gospel singer Diana Hopeson has opened up about the marital trauma she experienced and how she managed to navigate the difficult period. In an interview with Kafui Dey, shared on X and sighted by GhanaWeb on August 25, 2026, the renowned singer, while recounting the challenges she faced in her marriage, advised couples in life-threatening situations to seek help and leave if necessary.
According to Ghana Web, Diana Hopeson emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in troubled marriages. She stated, "I will not advise anybody unless it is a matter of death; flee. If there is a death matter threatening your life, please ask for help and flee. But if there is no death matter, use the energy to find a solution to it, then try to let go of it because it will follow you, especially when there is a child involved. This is always a constant reminder."
Diana Hopeson explained that although she would recommend divorce when a relationship has reached a point beyond reconciliation, it should not be the first option when a marriage can still be salvaged. She noted that some couples opt for divorce even when their marriages could still be worked on, urging such couples to explore alternatives to save their relationships, as divorce can also be emotionally painful.
She further shared insights into the energy dynamics in relationships, stating, "I tell people the energy you need to separate, you need half of that to keep the relationship working. Separation energy is wilder. The separation energy is too much. So use the energy to make sure it works. Mine was a disease. We didn't even know what kind of disease it was. So it was inevitable, and my life was in danger."
Diana Hopeson also discussed the reasons behind the irreparable breakdown of her own marriage. She explained that her ex-husband, who had been a major support in her career, changed his mindset after she asked him to focus on being her husband rather than continuing as her manager. According to Diana, her husband was influenced by people who believed she would eventually abandon him because her career was flourishing.
The renowned singer revealed that the ultimate breaking point in her relationship was her husband's decision to take their marital issues to the media. She explained that although she had not made up her mind to pursue a divorce, her husband's actions eventually forced her to initiate the process, saying, "People who didn't know that there was this situation believed him. He's believable, and he can tell his stories. The fact that he even went to the press and asked them to publicise it, saying that I had left him, was my biggest pain."
Diana Hopeson concluded by expressing her deep hurt over the situation and her journey to move on as a single parent after her husband found someone else and pressured her to finalize the divorce.
