London: UK-Ireland High Commissioner Sarbah Zita Benson has presented a comprehensive account of alleged corruption within the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. In a video shared on August 12, 2026, and observed by GhanaWeb, Zita Benson revealed that scholarship recipients who pursued studies in the United Kingdom often had their spouses and children funded under the scheme without incurring costs.
According to Ghana Web, Zita Benson expressed her astonishment upon reviewing documents she acquired upon taking office. The documents purportedly detailed how the former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat allowed such practices. Zita Benson elaborated that the children and spouses of scholarship recipients were financially supported to join them in the UK during their academic pursuits.
She disclosed specific instances, including a case involving an individual she referred to as "Princess," who received a scholarship for a master's degree program. This individual allegedly traveled with her three children, all of whom were financially supported, along with her spouse, to reside in the UK during her studies. The alleged financial coverage extended to medical benefits and other costs, reportedly totaling around £90,000.
Zita Benson further claimed that each child of the scholarship recipients received approximately £8,160 in financial assistance. The funding purportedly covered various expenses, including visas, yellow fever cards, and travel tickets. Benson urged the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to probe these allegations and ensure those responsible for the alleged misuse of funds are held accountable and required to repay any misappropriated amounts.
She emphasized the need for swift action from the NIB, stating, "That is why NIB must move fast, make arrests, and make people pay for this. People must be funded. If you get a scholarship and you think that you are a wife and you are not ready to move away from your husband or your children, then they stay in Ghana and study."
