Accra: An Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Kwabena Agyenim-Boateng, has emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness of head and neck cancers, cautioning that evolving lifestyle practices are contributing to the rise of these conditions.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Agyenim-Boateng highlighted the significant increase in head and neck cancers, particularly among younger populations, underscoring the importance of education on risk factors, symptoms, and the necessity of early detection. During a discussion on GTV on July 27, 2026, he elaborated that head and neck cancers encompass various types affecting regions such as the nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, oropharynx, throat, voice box, and oesophagus.
Dr. Agyenim-Boateng pointed out that the head and neck region is vital to human health due to its role in essential functions like eating, breathing, smelling, tasting, hearing, and communication. He remarked, 'The head and neck region contributes so much to overall health and well-being. When you are talking about eating, it is your head and neck region, your sense of smell, your ability to taste, your ability to hear, and your ability to breathe.'
Furthermore, he noted the impact on communication, a core aspect of human relationships, when diseases affect the head and neck region. 'As you speak, communication is the lifeline of relationships. So all these functions of the human body are affected when the head and neck region is in trouble,' he stated.
Dr. Agyenim-Boateng stressed the critical nature of these cancers due to the essential roles the affected areas play in everyday life. He emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention for unusual symptoms in the head and neck region to enhance the chances of successful treatment.
World Head and Neck Cancer Day, observed annually on July 27, aims to raise awareness, promote early detection, and educate the public on the risk factors and symptoms of these cancers.
