Accra: Residents of Onsonyameye in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region are appealing to government and stakeholders for a Junior High School facility, additional trained teachers, and electricity for their community. The appeal was made during the school's Speech and Graduation Day held on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the Acting Headmaster of Onsonyameye Basic School, Joshua Nuamah Bebu, recalled that the school was established in 2019. He expressed gratitude to community members for their efforts in constructing the mud and bamboo structure, which enabled local children to avoid long distances for accessing KG and primary education. Prior to 2019, children in the farming community had to walk long distances to access basic education. With support from Ellembelle Complementary Education, residents built the current structure that now houses pupils from KG to Primary 6.
Joshua Nuamah Bebu voiced concerns about the future of pupils who started in KG in 2019 and have now been promoted to JHS One. He stated, "I am worried about how these new JHS One pupils will continue their education because the community doesn't have a JHS facility to accommodate them." The school currently has only three trained teachers and lacks proper furniture from KG to Primary 6. Furthermore, the community has no electricity, forcing students to rely on torchlight for nighttime studies.
The community is appealing to the Government, Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ghana Gas Company, the Ellembelle District Assembly, GES, and NGOs for assistance. Bebu pleaded for a decent classroom block and more professional teachers to be posted to the school, emphasizing the academic potential of their children and the urgent need for government support.
Bebu advised the newly promoted JHS One pupils to remain focused, disciplined, and take their academic work seriously. He also encouraged parents and community members to continue supporting the school. Farming of cocoa, oil palm, and food crops remains the main occupation in Onsonyameye.
