Accra: National Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yamin, has urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to expedite their investigation of his alleged involvement in illegal mining.
According to Ghana Web, the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, directed EOCO to investigate Joseph Yamin and the NDC's third Vice Chairman, Yakubu Abanga, due to allegations of their involvement in illegal mining in certain mining districts. In a letter dated July 15, 2025, Dr. Ayine instructed EOCO to invite Yamin and Abanga for interrogation following reports that raised concerns about rising illegal mining activities after the John Dramani Mahama government took office.
The Attorney General emphasized the seriousness of the issue, noting that the investigation aligns with President John Dramani Mahama's Reset Agenda. This agenda aims to restore discipline to Ghana's natural resource governance and eliminate illegal mining nationwide. Dr. Ayine highlighted the government's commitment to eradicating illegal mining and restoring order to the country's natural resource management.
The letter also empowered EOCO to address individuals complicit in illegal mining as identified in Prof. Frimpong Boateng's report. It stated that the investigation should encompass matters highlighted in this report.
In an interview on Accra-based Adom FM, Yamin expressed the need for a swift investigation to prevent the opposition from exploiting the situation. He questioned whether EOCO is aware of media and public discourse surrounding the investigation and urged them to promptly inform Ghanaians of their progress. Yamin stressed the importance of transparency and timely action to prevent political opponents from using the investigation against him and the NDC.
