Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana's football authorities to begin preparations immediately for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, insisting that early planning will be crucial to building on the Black Stars' progress. Speaking during an official inspection tour of the Ho Sports Stadium, Mahama praised the senior national team's performance at the 2026 World Cup and urged stakeholders to maintain the momentum by developing a long-term strategy ahead of the next global tournament.
According to Ghana Web, the President believes continuity within the team, coupled with proper planning, could give Ghana a stronger chance of competing for major honours at the next Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. Mahama emphasized the importance of starting preparations for the next World Cup immediately, recognizing the Black Stars' progress from their initial predictions to reaching the Round of 32 in 2026.
The Black Stars entered the 2026 World Cup with limited expectations but progressed to the newly introduced Round of 32 knockout stage under coach Carlos Queiroz's guidance. Ghana opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama before securing a goalless draw against England, extending their impressive record in second group matches at the World Cup. Despite a narrow defeat to Croatia in their final group game, their campaign ended with elimination against Colombia in the Round of 32.
Mahama stressed the importance of keeping the current team and persuading Queiroz to continue his work, with the hope that by the next AFCON and World Cup, Ghana could have a team capable of claiming the championship in either competition.
