Accra: The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has advocated for Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to be retained as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The former Egypt national team coach was offered a short-term contract to oversee Ghana's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the Black Stars were eliminated by Colombia after a 1-0 defeat.
According to Ghana Web, speaking on the possible extension of Queiroz's contract, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency said he would gladly welcome a decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to extend the coach's stay, citing his performance at the World Cup. He explained that Queiroz has given the Black Stars structure in every aspect of their game, describing it as 'organic football,' and emphasized the importance of continuity.
Kofi Adams expressed his support for Queiroz staying as Black Stars coach, highlighting the significance of continental competition. He pointed out that teams playing structured, organic football, which Queiroz has instilled, have shown success in continental competitions. Adams stressed the need for continuity as Ghana prepares for its qualifications starting in September, with an important match against C´te d'Ivoire.
Adams further emphasized that Queiroz's experience makes him the right manager to lead Ghana into AFCON qualification. He argued against introducing a new coach at this critical time, advocating for someone familiar with the team and its dynamics. Adams praised Queiroz's strategic approach and suggested that with improvements in certain areas, the coach could effectively manage games to secure victories.
The GFA has not yet publicly communicated its decision regarding Carlos Queiroz's future, leaving the question of whether his contract will be extended or a new manager appointed unanswered.
