Accra: Kofi Tonto, an aide to the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has alleged that Dennis Miracles Aboagye is being politically targeted following his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to Ghana Web, Tonto made these claims during an interview on Peace FM, emphasizing that Aboagye's arrest was motivated by his vocal criticism of the current government. "Dennis Miracles Aboagye is being persecuted because he is a strong critic of the failing Mahama government. None of these actions will silence him or NPP communicators," Tonto asserted.
The comments come in the wake of a protest by NPP supporters who on Monday gathered at the EOCO offices, demanding the immediate release of Aboagye, who is widely known as "Miracles." Aboagye, who previously served as the Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), was detained on Saturday amid investigations into the alleged misappropriation of approximately GHS55 million at the Secretariat.
EOCO has stated that the arrest was the result of months-long investigations into alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities at IMCCoD. The probe also includes the Secretariat's former Accountant, Gerald Appiah, who is being scrutinized for his involvement in the same issue.
The arrest has sparked significant political discussions, with the NPP arguing that Aboagye is being unfairly singled out due to his outspoken stance against the government. However, EOCO has clarified that their inquiry is founded on allegations of financial misconduct, highlighting the need for accountability in the use of public funds.
