Georgetown: Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, has called on Christians to embrace intense, consistent, and prolonged prayer as a catalyst for spiritual revival. Rev Wengam, who is also a Cabinet/Executive Member of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, made the call while addressing the 22nd Biennial General Council Meeting of the Guyana Assemblies of God.
According to Ghana News Agency, Rev Wengam spoke on the theme, 'The Awesome Deeds of Prayer,' emphasizing the indispensability of sustained prayer in experiencing genuine revival. He stated, "Intense, consistent, deliberate and prolonged praying births unequalled revival. More prayer provokes the release of fresh revival."
Rev Wengam drew lessons from church history and Scripture, reminding the gathering that prayer preceded the historic Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, United States, which eventually led to the formation of the Assemblies of God Fellowship in 1914. He referenced Acts 1:14, noting that the 120 disciples remained united in prayer in the Upper Room for 10 days before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
He highlighted that the Holy Spirit did not descend on the first or second day, underscoring the need for persistence in prayer before great revival can occur. "It takes much prayer for great revival to take place, like what happened on the Day of Pentecost," he said, citing Acts 2.
Following the sermon, Rev Wengam led the congregation in an intensive prayer session, which participants described as a profound spiritual experience. The atmosphere was marked by fervent intercession and manifestations associated with spiritual revival and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Testifying after the service, Bishop John Smith, General Superintendent of the Guyana Assemblies of God, noted that the gathering had experienced an unusual visitation of the Holy Spirit. "We have experienced the visitation of the Holy Spirit in an unusual manner," Bishop Smith said.
The 22nd Biennial General Council Meeting brought together ministers, church leaders, and delegates from across Guyana to deliberate on matters relating to the growth and mission of the church.
