Kumasi: The Minority in Parliament has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of meting out what it calls 'wickedness' in the distribution of health resources to residents in the Ashanti Region. The caucus claims that the NDC government has deliberately neglected the health needs of the Ashanti Region by abandoning several major health infrastructure projects across the area.
According to Ghana Web, the accusation came on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, when the Minority caucus toured a number of stalled health facilities in the region. The visit was led by the Ranking Member on Parliament's Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, who described the state of the projects as 'a betrayal of public trust.' Facilities inspected during the tour included the Afari Military Hospital, the Sewua Government Hospital, and several sites under the Agenda 111 hospital initiative.
The Minority stated that many of these projects have reached an advanced stage of construction but have been left to deteriorate due to a lack of funding and political commitment. Addressing the media during the tour, Dr. Afriye did not mince words, accusing the NDC government of deliberately neglecting the region's health needs by abandoning major infrastructural projects that could save lives. He described this as 'wickedness in the sharing of resources.'
The Minority argued that the abandoned hospitals were intended to reduce pressure on existing health facilities in Kumasi and improve access for residents in surrounding communities. With the projects stalled, patients must continue to travel long distances for basic care, while partially built structures remain exposed to the elements and risk going to waste.
Dr. Afriye called on the government to immediately release funds and prioritize the completion of the abandoned hospitals. He warned that the Minority would use its parliamentary oversight role to keep the issue alive on the floor of the House until action is taken. 'These facilities cannot be left to rot. The people of Ashanti deserve better,' he added.
