Ashaiman: Mrs Safia Ayivor, a philanthropist and advocate for Antenatal Care, has celebrated her 40th birthday by donating toiletries, diapers, and other essential items to approximately 50 mothers and pregnant women at the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital. The donation, valued at thousands of Ghana cedis, aims to support women, especially those from deprived backgrounds, during the early stages of childcare and motherhood.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs Ayivor emphasized the importance of equipping polyclinics with anaesthesia machines and surgical packs to improve maternal healthcare in the country. She urged the government, private organizations, and individuals to prioritize these provisions to enhance the healthcare system's capability to handle emergencies effectively.
Mrs Ayivor highlighted the critical need for polyclinics to perform Cesarean sections safely, which can alleviate the pressure on teaching hospitals and save valuable time for mothers in emergencies. Accompanied by family and friends, Mrs Ayivor and her team presented the items to support mothers and expectant women receiving care at the facility.
Addressing the operational challenges, Mrs Ayivor noted that ANC units and maternity wards face severe space constraints, leading to long waiting times and overcrowded wards. This situation places immense pressure on frontline midwives and nurses, stretching them to their limits.
Mrs Ayivor called on benevolent organizations and individuals to invest in healthcare facilities' critical infrastructure, rather than focusing solely on consumable items. She emphasized that such investments are crucial for improving healthcare delivery and building a resilient system capable of handling emergencies efficiently.
In addition to donating items, Mrs Ayivor and her team engaged with nurses and caregivers at the facility to explore further ways to support the polyclinic in the future.
