Accra: The Assin Odumase Restoration Child and Youth Development (AORCYD), in collaboration with Compassion International, has commissioned an ultra-modern washroom facility. The facility, valued at GHS230,000.00, serves the people of Assin Odumase in the Assin South District of the Central Region, featuring a 10-seater water closet toilet and two bathrooms.
According to Ghana News Agency, Rev John Evans Arthur, a Minister at the Abura Dunkwa Assemblies of God Church, emphasized the importance of community engagement during the commissioning. He urged the community members and local leaders to take ownership of the washroom facility and maintain it with care. Rev Arthur expressed confidence that the new facility would significantly reduce open defecation in the area.
The World Health Organisation and UNICEF report that approximately 4.2 billion people globally lack access to safely managed sanitation. In Ghana, nearly 20 percent of households do not have access to basic toilet facilities, which contributes to preventable diseases, reduced productivity, and compromised dignity. The new facility in Assin Odumase aims to address these issues by improving sanitation and hygiene in the community.
Mr. Isaac Nartey, the Project Facilitator of AORCYD, highlighted the critical need for constructing the washroom to maintain a high level of sanity and hygiene in the community. He urged the residents to treat the facility with the attention it deserves. Additionally, Mr. Theophilus Assumang Amoako, Assemblyman for the Odumasi-Sibinso Electoral Area, advised against smoking in the facility and encouraged users to contribute financially to its maintenance.
The official commissioning event was attended by traditional chiefs and elders (Nananom), teachers, opinion leaders, clergy, and students.
