Nsawam: Former Ghana Football Association president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has emphasized the importance of providing greater support for prison inmates during a significant outreach programme at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. Speaking at the event, Nyantakyi highlighted the initiative's focus on not only donating items but also restoring hope and aiding in the rehabilitation of the inmates.
According to Ghana Web, Nyantakyi explained that the project is about more than just paying fines for inmates. It includes long-term support measures such as legal aid, feeding, clothing, and rehabilitation. The initiative aims to address the needs of those who are trying to find legal representation to have their cases reviewed in court, potentially leading to their release.
Nyantakyi stressed the uniqueness of the initiative, stating that it is multi-faceted and should not be compared to other projects. He highlighted the project's comprehensive nature, which includes diverse aspects of support to ensure a holistic approach to inmate rehabilitation.
As part of the outreach, the delegation donated over 30 footballs, more than 15 sets of jerseys, bibs, and other sporting equipment to support football activities within the prison. This contribution is part of a broader effort to use sports as a tool for rehabilitation and personal development among the inmates.
Nyantakyi also called on corporate Ghana to increase their support for sports development and rehabilitation programmes. He pointed out the ongoing challenges faced by Ghana's domestic football leagues, which continue to struggle with securing sponsorships.
