Accra: The Ranking Member on Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Samuel Atta Mills, expressed disbelief after the Local Organising Committee for the 2023 All-African Games appeared before the committee. In a video shared on X and viewed by GhanaWeb on May 18, 2026, committee officials revealed the sum allegedly spent on approximately 6,000 police officers who provided security during the event.
According to Ghana Web, Samuel Atta Mills, visibly surprised by the figures presented, questioned the internal auditors on how such a substantial amount could have been allocated to an event that lasted less than a month. He also voiced concerns over the absence of proper documentation to substantiate the expenditure. Mills highlighted the unsupported claims amounting to $5.8 million for the police officers, questioning the Ministry of Sports' accountability.
In response to the concerns raised, the Executive Chairman of the Local Organising Committee stated his own surprise when the Ghana Police Service submitted a bill of $35.8 million after the games. He explained that despite multiple requests for a detailed breakdown and justification for the amount, the police service failed to provide any. The Executive Chairman noted that the bill was unexpected and lacked prior agreement, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the financial dealings related to the event.
