Accra: A special intelligence team of the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled a notorious robbery gang responsible for a series of violent attacks in the region. This operation, which was led by intelligence, took place on April 29, resulting in significant breakthroughs in the fight against crime in the Upper East Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, four suspects, identified as Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul, were apprehended at their hideout in Zuarungu. The operation also resulted in the deaths of two suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu, whose identities were confirmed in a press release issued to the news agency.
During the operation, police retrieved a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, which had been hidden in the storage compartment of a motorbike. This motorbike, along with others, was believed to have been stolen by suspect Samsudeen and an accomplice known as D.J., who is currently at large. The police also recovered seven additional motorbikes thought to be stolen.
The suspects, under interrogation, confessed to their involvement in multiple robbery incidents across the region. These confessions include a violent attack on February 4, along the Zuarungu-Kongo road, where a bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, was injured, and a separate attack on a cargo truck driver, Mohammed Ibrahim. They also admitted to a robbery at the Kejetia mining site at Gbane on March 28, where a miner named Atani Mark was robbed of cash and gold.
The press release mentioned that the deceased suspects, Samsudeen and Safianu, sustained gunshot injuries during the police operation. Their bodies have been transported to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy. Meanwhile, the four arrested suspects are currently in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations. Efforts are being made to apprehend other accomplices, including the individual identified as 'DJ.'
