Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has lauded the efforts of workers from Ghana's key power generation institutions during a May Day celebration, following the successful restoration of operations at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam. This comes after a fire incident at the dam's switchyard control room caused disruptions to electricity supply nationwide.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama addressed attendees at the 2026 May Day celebration, themed 'Pivoting to Gross Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods, Resetting Ghana Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,' at Jackson Park on May 1. He informed the crowd that engineers had managed to restore the facility's full functionality following the incident. The president shared that he had personally inspected the damage at the Volta River Authority (VRA) Electricity Generation Station, offering reassurances about the restored power supply.
Engineers from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the VRA collaborated to bypass the damaged control system and succeeded in restarting all six turbines at the plant. The Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is now fully operational, a development that was met with applause from the gathered workers and citizens.
President Mahama expressed his appreciation for the engineers' rapid response and technical skills, emphasizing their importance to the nation. He described the engineers as a living testament to the value that Ghanaian workers bring to their country.
Furthermore, the president announced the continuation of his ongoing regional tour, with the Eastern Region being the current focus. This 'Resetting Ghana Tour' will culminate in a Citizens' Engagement Town Hall Meeting, where President Mahama intends to engage with a diverse group of stakeholders, including students, artisans, health workers, traders, and traditional and religious leaders.
