Kumasi: The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has awarded a GHS 400 million contract for the procurement of medical equipment to establish a new teaching hospital at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative is part of the government's programme to strengthen tertiary healthcare delivery and enhance the capacity of public universities to provide globally competitive training and services. A statement from GETFund indicated that the hospital is expected to serve as a hub for clinical training, advanced medical research, and specialised healthcare.
The new teaching hospital will offer hands-on training opportunities for medical students, support innovation in key medical fields, and improve access to quality healthcare in the Ashanti Region and beyond. Mr. Paul Adjei, Administrator of GETFund, acknowledged the efforts of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in championing the establishment of the hospital. As the Chancellor of KNUST, he engaged stakeholders and advocated for investment in medical training and healthcare delivery.
Mr. Adjei also commended the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, for her leadership in advancing the project. Stakeholders in the education and health sectors have welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a strategic investment that will enhance Ghana's healthcare infrastructure and human resource capacity.
