Berekuso: Mr. Julian Opuni, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, has called for enhanced collaboration between industry and education sectors to address Ghana's skills gap. He made this appeal during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) Berekuso Multi-Skills Campus in the Eastern Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Opuni emphasized the disconnect between classroom education and the demands of the workplace. He remarked that despite the hard work and education of young individuals, many find their hopes dwindling as they transition into the workforce, not due to a lack of ambition or intelligence, but because the educational system does not adequately prepare them for future challenges.
Mr. Opuni pointed out that this gap results in businesses struggling to find skilled workers while young people face difficulties in finding meaningful employment. He praised DTI for its approach to education, which focuses on building capabilities and preparing young individuals for job readiness and entrepreneurship.
The Berekuso Multi-Skills Campus, a USD 28 million investment, aims to enhance technical and vocational training in Ghana. Mr. Opuni highlighted Fidelity Bank's involvement in this initiative as part of its commitment to fostering economic growth and opportunities. He stated that the Bank's role extends beyond financial services, contributing to a broader ecosystem that supports the transition from education to employment.
Fidelity Bank has pledged a USD 100,000 contribution towards a Student Centre at the campus, designed to facilitate practical skills acquisition, industry engagement, and confidence-building. Mr. Opuni also announced ongoing support for DTI through initiatives such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship development, and providing access to financial services for graduates and young entrepreneurs.
Ms. Constance Swaniker, Founder and CEO of DTI, described the project as a strategic investment in Africa's workforce. With over 60 percent of Africa's population under 25, she emphasized the immense opportunity to equip youth with relevant, industry-ready skills.
