Afenyo-Markin Stresses Importance of Maintaining Core Values in Political Debate

Accra: The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has emphasised that while ideological debates can be passionate and emotional, politicians must never lose sight of core values, such as respect and love for one another. He noted that expressing strong political opinions is acceptable, but one must avoid crossing red lines that can damage personal or professional relationships. According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin stated that even when emotions run high, reactions should remain political, not personal. He highlighted the importance of maintaining core values, such as love and respect, amidst passionate and emotional ideological arguments. Afenyo-Markin pointed out that most members in the chamber are centrist, advocating for fierce political debate while preserving relationships. In a recent interview on Metro TV, Afenyo-Markin remarked on the potential loss of relationships when stating facts, emphasizing the necessity of speaking the bitter truth cautiously. He reminded colleague s that today's opposition could become tomorrow's government, and using measured language allows for future cooperation. Afenyo-Markin advised politicians to be measured in their language, suggesting that while it's important to critique the government, it's equally important to give it space to operate. This approach, he argued, ensures that when a new government takes office, it has the necessary room to function effectively.
