Accra: President John Dramani Mahama used the occasion of Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary to appeal to Ghanaians to place the nation above their personal interests. He emphasized that the country should be prioritized over party affiliations, tribal connections, and individual ambitions, asserting that Ghana’s collective identity surpasses any singular entity.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama delivered his message during the Independence Day Celebration Parade in Accra, themed ‘Building Prosperity, Restore Hope’. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Terrance Michael Drew, the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, along with his wife, Diani Jinesha Prince-Drew. Other notable attendees included First Lady Lordina Mahama, Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
President Mahama stressed the importance of fostering a national culture of integrity, emphasizing that independence brings freedom, but it also requires responsibility. He called for discipline in managing public resources, adhering to laws, and treating each other with respect in public life.
The President highlighted that patriotism should be reflected in everyday actions, such as protecting public property, respectful public service, and investing in Ghana’s future. Addressing the youth, he acknowledged their potential and the unique opportunities available to them in the digital age, while also recognizing their challenges.
To support the younger generation, the government is investing in digital infrastructure, entrepreneurship programs, and innovation hubs across various cities including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Ho, and Koforidua. Education reforms are underway to align with modern economic demands, alongside expanded internship and apprenticeship programs to ease the transition from school to work.
President Mahama concluded by advising that success relies on discipline, resilience, and excellence, encouraging preparation for the future as a key to success.
